1. Materials and sourcing
Where your materials come from and why it matters. “Beeswax from hives I keep in the Catskills” is not a feature — it’s a story that creates authenticity and specificity competitors can’t copy.
2. Process and craft
How you make what you make, with the detail that reveals your standard. “Each pair is stitched on a vintage Singer machine, which creates a distinctive stitch pattern” is a differentiator. “Handmade with care” isn’t.
3. Specificity of audience
You can differentiate entirely through who you serve. The shop that specifically serves “teachers” with a teacher-focused product description, photo, and positioning will beat the shop with the same product and no specific buyer in mind — because that specific buyer feels seen.
4. The experience around the product
Packaging, communication style, turnaround time, customization process. Some shops win on product quality and lose on experience. The shops that win long-term make the experience as intentional as the product.
5. What you won’t do
Your constraints can be differentiators. “We don’t batch-pour — every candle is poured on your order date for freshness” is a standard that competitors who need to run batches can’t easily match.
6. Point of view
The opinion behind your work. The ceramic artist who believes wheel-throwing is fundamentally different from slip-casting and says so — clearly, confidently — differentiates from the ceramics shop that produces both and says nothing about why.
Communicating your differentiation (not just having it)
Here’s a common failure: sellers who have genuine differentiation but communicate it so generically that buyers can’t tell. They make everything from ethically-sourced materials and ship in sustainable packaging, but their listing says “high quality natural materials.”

The second version says the same things — quality, ethical, sustainable — but says them with specific, verifiable details that a buyer can understand and that competitors can’t easily match.
